Tummel Glen

Keen fly fisherman Jim Fisher landed the catch of his life with a stunning building plot close to his beloved River Tummel in Perthshire - and Scotframe, the UK's leading full kit manufacturer and supplier, helped make his dream come true with a fabulous house to match the location.

Now the retired banking specialist can enjoy his new career as a freelance casting instructor on the salmon rivers of Perthshire - and return in the evening to his warm and welcoming home overlooking the Tummel glen.

Jim, who has fished the Tummel for over 30 years, left the banking world 10 years ago and decided to move from Glasgow to Perthshire to pursue a change of lifestyle.
His wife Chirsty, who has an artistic flair, had always wanted to design and build their own house, but the right plot of land had never materialised.

However, the couple had a static caravan in the county and, in conversation with the owners, they learned that "one of the best plots in the valley" was on the market. After some negotiation, they got their "perfect three-quarter acre" on a gentle slope near lovely bluebell woods.

They got in touch with Scotframe, after an unreserved recommendation from Chirsty's brother, a retired Master of Works with long experience of the construction business.  The Inverurie and Cumbernauld-based manufacturer is the largest timber frame manufacturer in Scotland.

Jim said: "Of all the kit manufacturers we considered, Scotframe impressed us the most with their professional approach to the build and the outstanding quality of their products."
In particular, the couple - who are keen on environmentally friendly building methods - decided to use Scotframe's highly-regarded Val-U-Therm®, a new type of building panel from which a house which is effectively zero carbon can be quickly and efficiently erected.

Jim said: "Apart from the benefits of their amazing insulation value - we hardly need heating now - the Val-U-Therm® panels are impressive for their solidity and structure. Each one weighed nearly a ton and when the crane put them in place they locked together like a giant Lego set.

"The panels have the capacity to cut heating and energy bills dramatically. They are thick and solid and, though they cost a bit extra, there is no doubt that they are a great investment."

Jim and Chirsty project managed the build themselves, sourcing local blockwork and groundwork teams and finding joiners, electricians and plumbers from the Stirling area. They began the build in the summer and moved in to their completed home in May the following year.

Their house, which now stands in beautifully landscaped gardens, has four bedrooms - one of which is used as a study - large, open-plan living, dining and kitchen areas and a light and airy garden room with a log-burning fire.

Jim said: "I would have no hesitation in recommending Scotframe and its excellent products. The team we dealt with were supportive throughout the build. If we hit a snag, they were on to it immediately and came up with a solution.

"If we needed any extra material, it was delivered quickly, without demur. They are an excellent Scottish company and a credit to the construction business."
