Environment and Sustainability

Val-U-Therm delivers exceptional environmental performance – both as a product in its own right and in terms of the way in which it enhances the environmental credentials of any buildings it is part of.

The largest environmental benefit provided by Val-U-Therm comes from the savings in energy that it can deliver. Studies show that a typical home built to building regulations costs over £1,500 a year to heat. A similar home built using Val-U-Therm technology can cost a mere fraction of this to heat - typically less than £100 per year.

This exceptional thermal performance can deliver massive reductions in fossil fuel use and corresponding reductions in the emission of global warming gases and other pollutants. This is reflected in the fact that Val-U-Therm can help a building achieve an ‘A’ rated Energy Performance Certificate in a cost-effective way.

A Durable, Low-Carbon Solution

Because Val-U-Therm provides such a high level of insulation it removes the need to install complex and costly heating systems. What’s more, an investment in Val-U-Therm wall, floor and roof panels will last for the entire life of the building - unlike renewables that need to be controlled, require frequent maintenance and, often, wholesale replacement during the lifetime of a property. In contrast, the Val-U-Therm system is a Fit and Forget, Fabric First solution.

An Environmentally-Sustainable Product

Val-U-Therm is an inherently sustainable product due to the careful sourcing of low-impact raw materials. This is shown by the fact that the timber frame and insulation technology used in Val-U-Therm can deliver an "A/A+" BRE Green Guide Rating (depending on the cladding used).

The BRE Green Guide Rating is part of the BRE Environmental Assessment Method, an accredited environmental rating scheme for buildings. It provides a straightforward answer to which specifications within an element group have the lowest environmental impact. Those with A+ ratings have the lowest possible overall environmental impact.

Key environmental sustainability benefits of Val-U-Therm ’s raw materials include:

Renewable Bio-Based Insulation
Val-U-Therm contains insulation derived from renewable vegetable oil.

Timber Sustainability
Our distributors are certificated by the leading authorities for the supply and sourcing of timber from renewable sources - the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and/or PEFC (the world's largest forest certification organization). .

Environmental Impact
The insulation used in Val-U-Therm has zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) and is CFC (chloroflurocarbon), HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) and HCFC (hydrochloroflourocarbon) free.

The insulation in Val-U-Therm panels is effectively hermetically sealed and therefore has an almost indefinite lifespan. However, at the end of their service life Val-U-Therm panels and their constituent timber and polyurethane insulation can be recycled into new products or incinerated in a clean, controlled manner to produce energy as a substitute fossil fuel.  The panel is stripped of its protective plasterboard and any other fire resistant claddings, broken up into smaller, easier to ignite pieces and then incinerated with municipal solid waste (MSW) using pre-heat incineration and air injection to generate high temperatues.

This is a development of MSW incineration where the heat is recovered through boilers for energy generation and the waste gases are chemically cleaned & scrubbed to minimise environmental pollution.  The Parties to the Montreal Protocol approve MSW combustion as a destruction technology for ozone depleting substances (as used in earlier types of polyurethane foam rather than in the latest technology used by Val-U-Therm).  Importantly, it has been demonstrated that the very low emissions from modern MSW combustion plants are not increased by the presence of polyurethane foams.
Manufactured and Delivered With the Environment in Mind

Every aspect of the Val-U-Therm manufacturing and delivery process is designed with waste reduction and environmental sustainability in mind:

Bulk Purchasing
Bulk material purchasing and delivery in liquid form (that expands over 30 times to form an insulating foam) reduces the environmental impact of our raw material deliveries.

Minimizing Waste
The CAD/CAM timber frame manufacturing process includes CNC optimizing saws to minimize timber waste. What’s more, the minimal off-cuts are incinerated to provide heat for the factories & offices.
The Val-U-Therm polyurethane injection process results in less than 1% wastage - compare this to the wastage involved in the cutting and fitting of other types of insulation on or off site and the handling, storage and landfill implications of this waste.

Efficient Transportation
Val-U-Therm panels are transported to construction sites using a flat-pack configuration – this minimises the number of journeys that have to be made and so reduces a project’s overall environmental impact.
